Nancy Wakefield

Position Title
Home Visit Specialist

Nancy is a native Oregonian, born in Portland and raised near Milwaukie. She graduated from Clackamas High School and went on to attend Lewis and Clark College. She later earned a Master’s Degree in Special Education from Western Oregon University and various school administrative credentials from Portland State University and Lewis and Clark College.

After graduating from Lewis and Clark with a major in Elementary Education, Nancy was hired as a 6th grade teacher in the Redmond, Oregon, school district. During her 15 years with Redmond, she taught 5th and 6th grades, special education for grades 5 through 8, and reading and math to talented and gifted students in grades 3 through 6. The second half of her career in public education was spent in administration. She was the principal at St Mary’s Public School in the Mt. Angel School District, at Merrill and Malin Elementary Schools in the Klamath County School District, and at Garibaldi and Nehalem Elementary Schools in the Neah Kah Nie School District in northern Tillamook County. She finished her public education career as the as the district-level administrator for special education, talented and gifted, and English language learner programs in Neah Kah Nie.

After retiring, Nancy moved back to Clackamas County. She began volunteering with the Court Appointed Special Advocates (CASA) program as a way to continue working with and serving children. After several years as a CASA, she was dismayed to learn that there were no foster placements available for one of her “CASA kids,” a teen-aged boy, so she “retired” as a CASA in order to become his foster parent. Nancy is proud of her foster son. He graduated high school, is working, and is living independently, although he occasionally shows up with a load of laundry to do, looking for a hot meal.

While attending Lewis and Clark College, Nancy participated in their Overseas Study Program, spending a semester in Japan. She made lifelong friends there, and has made 5 or 6 trips back over the years. Most recently, she spent a month in Japan in October, 2019. She has also enjoyed travelling in the western states, as well as to Mexico, Canada, the Mediterranean area, Great Britain, and Norway. She looks forward to travelling more in the future. Other pastimes Nancy enjoys include camping, reading, gardening, cooking, and knitting.
